Gettysburg College was established as Pennsylvania College in 1832 and had several programs that no longer exist – the Medical School of Pennsylvania College in Philadelphia and the Preparatory Department. The Board of Trustees had strong opinions on the education of women and often disputed whether or not they should be admitted. At one point the Board of Trustees did not consider any more female applicants, but allowed women already enrolled to continue their studies. Trustees bounced back and forth on women admission, however, those enrolled were not removed. In 1921, Pennsylvania College became Gettysburg College.
